HISTORY: WIKI LINK
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?: Grace is very strong for a child and it’s seen in every scene with her and her father. She can tell that he’s trying his best for them and that it weighs heavily on his shoulders. There are small things that she does in order to alleviate that stress. One of the most notable of this is how often she tells her father that she only needs him to be happy. Another indication of this is seen in her expressions. Throughout the times that you see her in canon it’s very noticeable that her expression changes the moment her father turns away. It’s more stoic and thoughtful. She puts on a smile for him even when she doesn’t always feel it.
She is far more practical than her father and its part because she doesn’t have many memories of their lavished life. She is able to find happiness in everything around her and she wants to share that with those she cares about. She is happy to have a bunny toy that is made by her father over the one from town because it’s from him and as such it means more. She’s thankful for what she has and weighs things by sentimental value more than market value.
Her eyes are open to the world and its truths. She’s very perceptive but will down play what she notices to put those around her at ease. She’s very respectful and polite to those around her. She doesn’t like to trouble people. This is most easily seen in the short view of her and her father in town. She greats those around her with a smile and while she understands why her father can’t buy the bunny she doesn’t push it when it’s clear that he can’t haggle with the old woman. Instead she urges her father away, putting him before her own desires and wants.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?: Grace is young and her experiences aren’t very diverse. There are things that she struggles to understand as a child because she has no context for them. The most prominent is the reason that her father left. She has trouble understanding why he left and then why he didn’t come back. Part of this is because he never explains it to her, she can guess but there is no way to know for sure.
The following is head canon: Over time she begins to wonder if she’s the reason that he left. She’s filled with self-doubt and begins to invent reasons; thinking that she was a bad daughter. Being so emotionally attached to her father makes it harder for her to see clearly and understand. Her emotions and her intelligence don’t mingle well together and often her heart will begin to control her thoughts. Her heart is hurt, she feels abandoned and while she doesn’t blame her father she feels compelled to blame someone and that someone ends up being herself.
It’s later in her timeline that she’s able to meet her father again. All she does is shout his name because it’s in that moment that she releases that he’s been searching for her the whole time and her worries are finally able to dissipate.
There is no way that there aren’t deep wounds from her father leaving however it isn’t every explicitly stated within the canon. There are the moments when Jefferson expresses his feelings of disappointment in himself. When he kidnaps Emma and then when he’s speaking to Henry. In this instance I think it’s very much like father like daughter. They both have the tendency to over think and be fueled by emotions.
WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?: The events that has the largest impact are her mother’s death and her father leaving. Grace is very young when her mother leaves and all she knows is that she doesn’t come back. She understands that her mother will not come back and she doesn’t have enough memories to miss her mother which is why she appears so well adjusted when it’s just her and her father.
Her mother’s death, however, leaves a deep rooted fear in Grace which is one of the reasons that she begs for her father not to leave. When he does leave she thinks that he’ll never come back and as they days continue that feeling grows. Grace doesn’t want to be alone, like any young child she wants to be with her parents but she also wants to be strong for them. She’s scared of not only losing her father but of him losing her. They are a family and that’s very important to her. Even during the curse it’s obvious in Grace’s, Paige’s, new life that family is important. Every night Jefferson has to watch them eat dinner together and watch his daughter smile while never knowing who he is.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?: Like most young children, Grace wants to find where she fits. She’d prefer to find where her and her father fit in but she knows that it might not be possible. She’s felt like a burden most of her life. Both of her parents kept trying their best to make a happy life for them and they both ended up leaving Grace in that attempt. She lives with the neighbors during the duration before the curse hits the Enchanted Forest and while they’re very nice people she doesn’t feel like she belongs because it isn’t her home. Her home is where her father is. This leaves her feeling displaced and searching for things that she’s good at and a place where she belongs. A lot of this is head canon but I feel like the way that she runs to her father when they are reunited again, the smile on her face and the fact that she doesn’t hesitate shows that where she belongs is with her father.
WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?: Grace comes off as young and innocent. She isn’t afraid of asking questions which gives her the appearance of someone who knows very little however she never asks the same question more than once and she often makes inventive leaps on her own. Her questions are phrased in such a way that they seem simple, breaking things down to their smallest parts to understand them. She hasn’t had an easy childhood, that much is obvious but it only shows itself in her line of questioning, if talking about clothing or saving, it’ll be implied to those perceptive enough that she isn’t used to having a lot of money. If asked she’ll be honest and say that they had what they needed but leave it at that unless pressed.
Through the show she voices her opinion openly but never pushes her father too far, respecting his decisions. She’ll ask about mushrooms and laugh and have fun with her father despite the weight of their situation. Her innocent is seen in everything she does. The cutest time is the short cut to when she’s having a tea party and her father gifts her the handmade bunny that she then gives a voice.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?: The reason she breaks her questions down is because it gives her a base to start with and she’ll often build from there on her own. She doesn’t need to know everything to discover everything for herself. She’s very self-reliant and able to do things on her own. Not many children her age are able to take care of themselves. This is seen best when she comes home, takes off her cloak and sets things up without being prompted by her father.
Grace is also perceptive and wise but she down plays these traits because she notices others discomfort around her when she can pick up on things that they don’t want her too. She is also very hurt. Life has left her scared but she’ll cover up those wounds and continue forward. It takes a lot to break her down and it’s difficult to notice the depth of her pain. The best way to see this is when she’s talking to her father about leaving. It’s obvious that she’s trying to be strong for him, to ask him why and reassure him that all she needs his him to be happy. She wouldn’t do this unless she already understood why he was leaving.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?: Grace is accustomed to taking things in stride. She faces each situation while having her doubt seethe beneath the surface. She won’t let it get in her way or stop her. She’s very much like her mother in this regard. She’ll listen to her heart and do anything to protect those she considers her family. She knows where her strengths are and won’t do anything reckless however she’ll try to find a way to help or stay out of the way. Her father leaving is my favorite example of most of her traits, how she handles each step of that process however you can also see this when the queen first arrives at their house. She’s scared because she can see how her father reacts to the black carriage and how he tells her to hide in the woods. She doesn’t know what’s going on but she listens and stays back, trusting her father to handle the situation. She’s very trusting though she understands that you can’t trust everyone.
WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?: She will remember her mother’s smile and general presence, she’ll remember how she feels about her father even if she doesn’t remember anything else about him, she’ll remember having tea parties, playing hide and seek with someone and that her bunny was made for her and that’s why it’s so important.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?: She has a fine attention to detail and potential to excel with fragile things like drawing. She’s young and able to grow in ways that are defined by her setting. She has talents in specific skills that I’ve extrapolated from her parents being thieves but there are things that Grace will be awful at… like math. These will come up randomly and I can’t put a list to them but it is all head canon and it’s a way that I draw depth to the character and make them feel more real, more so since she’s young and her interests are malleable. Also she’s not a main canon character so there is little to draw.
SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES: Grace is a twelve year old girl and has the human strengths and abilities of a twelve year old girl. Below is a list of things that she can currently do very well.
Sniffer: Grace, for whatever reason, is able to sniff out mushrooms. It isn't completely unlike a pig but it suggests that her sense of smell is very sharp.
Seeker: Grace is the master at hide & seek having been able to find her father more times than she can count. It's only a game but she's been able to practice finding people when trampling through the woods. This has given her the ability to find people and map her way through a forest.
Hider: She is less skilled at hiding but is able to slip into small gaps and blend in with the area around her.
Tea Apprentice: Grace knows tea. Her father is an expert at combining flowers and flavors and they've even grown some around the house. She can identify most teas by smell alone and has a rather skilled ability at tending to plants.
INVENTORY: She'll come in with her dress and her red cloak. She'll also have a basket that has the bunny that her father had made her, a small ragged table cloth and her small tea set, as well as some teas she's made and collected from the enchanted forest. She was getting ready for a tea party when she was taken.
